SR-22 and FR-44 Information
What is an SR-22?
An SR-22 is an endorsement that is attached as an addendum to your auto insurance policy. It is submitted to the State of Florida by your insurance agent or carrier when your policy is written. The SR-22 attests to the fact that you have at least 10/20 bodily injury (i.e., $10K per person and $20K per accident), and at least $10K in property damage coverage.
Why do I need an SR-22?
The State of Florida considers you a “high risk” driver, and they want to make sure you are keeping your insurance coverage continually in effect. Some people are required to have an SR-22 because they were caught driving without insurance – don’t ever do this! Other people are required to have an SR-22 because they have too many traffic violations.
How much does an SR-22 cost?
Insurance premiums are calculated based upon many different factors such as a person’s age, gender, the geographic area they live in, and their driving record. So, it’s impossible to say for certain how much you will pay without taking into consideration all these variables. The best thing to do is call us for a customized no-obligation quote so you will know for sure. We have agents standing by to help you at (727) 546-5600.
This sounds expensive; can I make monthly payments on my SR-22 and insurance?
In some cases, you can, in some cases you can’t; it all depends upon the the filing the state requires. Again, that’s why it’s best to speak with a licensed agent who can help navigate all this for you. Call us now at (727) 546-5600.
How long do I have to keep an SR-22?
Generally speaking, the State of Florida requires individuals to keep an SR-22 for 2-3 years, depending on the case. Every situation is different; however, so it’s best to speak with a licensed agent who can tell you for sure.
What is an FR-44?
An FR-44 is similar to an SR-22; it is an addendum to your auto insurance policy that attests to the fact that you have at least 100/300/50 in coverage, or $100K per person, $300K per accident, and $50K in property damage. The State of Florida requires drivers convicted of a DUI to carry these higher policy limits to protect the public in the event they hurt someone while behind the wheel. Like an SR-22, the FR-44 is submitted to the State of Florida by your insurance agent or carrier when your policy is written.
How long do I have to keep an FR-44?
The FR44 coverage is required for 3 years from date of issue. After you are convicted of a DUI, you will be notified by the State of Florida as to exactly when you can be issued your FR44 coverage.

No. The State of Florida requires all FR-44 policies to be paid in full before coverage can be put into place.
I live outside Florida for six months a year. When not in Florida, my vehicle is in storage and not used. Must I maintain automobile insurance?
Yes. Any vehicle holding a valid Florida license plate and registration must be covered by a Florida insurance policy throughout the entire registration period. When you leave Florida, you may surrender your license plate and registration at the nearest driver license or Tax Collector office to avoid maintaining your policy. You can always register your vehicle upon your return to Florida, at which time you can provide proof of Florida insurance.
Can I get an FR-44 if I do not actually own the vehicle I am driving?
